What eClearing Is

eClearing (in e-mobility) usually refers to the clearing and settlement function behind EV charging roaming — the B2B layer that helps Charge Point Operators (CPOs) and e-Mobility Service Providers (eMSPs) exchange charging data and reconcile transactions so drivers can charge across multiple networks with one contract/app/card.

In many contexts, “eClearing” is used to mean a roaming hub / clearing house, such as e-clearing.net, which provides a platform for interoperability and data exchange between market players.

Why eClearing Matters

eClearing enables a many-to-many roaming model, so networks don’t need to build separate bilateral integrations with every partner:
– Broader charging access for drivers (single contract across networks)
– Standardized exchange of session and billing data
– Lower integration complexity for CPOs and eMSPs when connecting through a hub

What Data eClearing Typically Handles

Depending on the hub/protocol setup, eClearing commonly supports exchange of:
Authorisation/tokens (is this driver allowed to charge?)
Charge Point information (locations, availability/status)
Charging session data and Charge Detail Records (CDRs) used for billing and reconciliation

How It Relates to OCPI and Other Roaming Protocols

A lot of roaming data exchange is done with open standards like OCPI, which is designed for information exchange between CPOs and eMSPs (authorisation, status, transaction events, CDRs, commands, smart charging info).
Some hubs also use other roaming/clearing protocols (e.g., OCHP) depending on the ecosystem and partner setup.

Common Pitfalls

– Assuming “roaming connectivity” automatically solves commercial settlement (pricing rules, VAT invoicing, dispute handling still need clear agreements)
– Poor tariff transparency across roaming → complaints and reconciliation disputes
– Data quality issues (wrong station IDs, incomplete CDRs) causing billing errors
