MTBF

MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is a reliability metric that estimates the average operating time between inherent failures of a repairable system. In EV charging, MTBF is used to describe how often a charger, power module, communication unit, or other component is expected to fail during normal operation.

What MTBF indicates in EV charging

MTBF helps operators and manufacturers understand reliability at different levels:
Charger-level MTBF: how often the full charging station experiences a failure that affects service
Subsystem MTBF: reliability of key parts like connectors, contactors, RCD, metering, LTE modem, or control PCB
Network MTBF: average time between outages across a fleet of chargers (often tracked alongside uptime)

MTBF is most meaningful when “failure” is clearly defined (for example: any fault causing a charger to be unavailable for use).

How MTBF is calculated

MTBF is typically calculated from operational data:
– MTBF = Total operating time / Number of failures
For a network, “total operating time” may be the sum of operating hours across all chargers in scope.

Examples of “operating time” definitions:
– Time a charger is powered and expected to be available
– Time a connector is available for sessions
– Time a module is active under load (common in DC power modules)

MTBF vs MTTR vs uptime

These reliability metrics are related but measure different things:
MTBF: how often failures occur
MTTR (Mean Time To Repair): how quickly failures are fixed
Uptime / availability: the percentage of time equipment is operational

A charger can have high MTBF (fails rarely) but poor uptime if MTTR is long, or it can have moderate MTBF but good uptime if repairs are fast and well-managed.

Why MTBF matters for CPOs and site owners

MTBF supports planning and performance management:
– Predicts maintenance workload and spare parts needs
– Helps set realistic SLAs and service contracts
– Improves procurement decisions by comparing reliability across models and suppliers
– Supports lifecycle cost models (failures drive truck rolls, downtime, and revenue loss)
– Identifies weak points (for example frequent failures in connectors or connectivity modules)

Practical considerations and common pitfalls

– MTBF can be misleading if failure counting is inconsistent (minor alarms vs service-impacting faults)
– Early-life “infant mortality” failures can reduce observed MTBF without reflecting mature reliability
– Field conditions (temperature, humidity, vandalism, power quality) strongly affect MTBF
– Software and connectivity issues can look like hardware failures unless classified correctly
– Averages hide variation; segmenting by site type, climate, and usage intensity improves insight
